June 28 – Quoddy Head State Park

It seem like we timed everything perfectly today to make the best out of some lousy weather.

All night it rained very hard and was windy enough to rock the RV. This morning it let off to a slight drizzle. I looked at the forecast and it said the rain would come back early in the afternoon. We decided to get up quickly and go for a short hike.

We got to the park about 10. Throughout the hike there was a very light rain. We got back to the car about 1. Almost as soon as I closed the door it started raining harder. Not really heavy but enough that you wouldn’t want to be out walking in it. Then within a few minutes of being back at the RV, it came down with a vengeance. It is now around 6 and it hasn’t really stopped.

Everything around here is the easternmost something. Quoddy Head is the easternmost point in the USA.

(Thanks Mom and Dad. We used our Christmas money for these rain suits)

Of course there is a lighthouse.

This one has one of the larger Fresnel lens of any on this coast.

And there is a fog horn that we can hear from our campground about 5 miles away.

We looked around the lighthouse museum for a few minutes and then headed out on first the Coastal Trail and then the Bog Trail for a total of about 5 km.

Then you break out right on the edge of a cliff and the headlands. The point off in the distance is called High Ledge

The trail got pretty close to the edge in some spots.

Here we are at High Ledge. It was a bit wetter out in the open. We eventually went as far as Green Point which can be seen in the pictures below.

There were a few steep sections and the boards were a bit slippery in the rain.

Mostly the trail was in pretty good shape.

We looked farther along the coast and decided it didn’t change much for a while so we turned back.

About half way back we took the detour to do the boardwalk of the Bog Trail.

There were lots of Pitcher plants.

There were some interpretive signs.

Closer to the lighthouse there was a staircase down to the beach.

We stayed for a bit and then headed back to the car. On the way back to the RV we drove through the nearby town of Lubec. If we get another dry spell we will go back and walk around.

Its about 7 now and the rain has let off. A bit foggier than yesterday.
