It was a grey day with a few patches of sun but the forecast called for rain in the early afternoon. We did two short walks in case it really started coming down.
Cathedral Grove is a grove of very tall western red cedars. It is on everyone’s to do list. Being right off the highway to Tofino and the fact that walks are short and flat make it always busy.
We will drive by here with the RV when we move to Port Alberni but there is no way I was going to try and park it here.
There is a short loop trail on either side of the highway.
A few decades ago a very strong wind storm blew through the grove and knocked a lot of the trees down. Their roots don’t go down very far so if the soil lets go, over they go. There are even signs at the entrance that says “If the wind is strong, do not enter”.
Not sure why I look so serious in this pic.
Even another owl.
A quick peek out into nearby Lake Cameron.
How can people be so stupid?
Lots of feeling very small.
The biggest tree in the park.
Look way up!
A whole herd of really tall ones.
Heading to the car we backtracked to Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park. We did the short loop (in solid red) to view the lower and upper falls and the twisty deep gorge in between.
First down to the bridge at the lower waterfall.
Looking upstream.
And downstream.

We went a bit farther downstream to the end of the trail.
The river makes one of many sharp turns here.
Looking back up towards the bridge.
Continuing the loop towards the upper falls we got closer to the lower one.
Looking downstream back to the bridge.
Time to climb.
The upper falls has two levels. This is the side view of the upper section.
A bit farther along we could see the gorge where the river make a sharp turn at the bottom of the lower section.
Then a side view of the lower section.
Then around the corner the front view of both.

This looked like a great place for lunch.
As we were sitting there its started to rain. Never very hard but enough to get us to put our rain jackets on. We moved on, across the bridge to the other side of the gorge.
A view back to across our lunch spot.
Around another bend.
Another falls hiding down there.
One final look down before we head back to the car.
With a quick stop at a trading post on the way home.
