June 23 – Western Brook Pond

We had booked a boat trip on the Western Brook Pond. This is a long narrow fiord with kilometer high cliffs on each side that is now closed off from the sea. It is one of the showpieces of the park that everyone must see.

Since we were a bit early we stopped and did a short hike on the Coastal Trail which followed a river to the shore.

We hiked along the shore for a while before turning back.

To get to the boat you have to walk in about 3 km from the highway along a very flat easy trail.

The tours are very popular. It was a good thing we booked ahead as they were full and walkups were out of luck.

And off we go.

I tried to put the other boat in most of the pictures for a sense of scale. These cliffs are so massive sometimes its hard to find the boat.

Since it was only around 2 pm we stopped to check out the shipwreck S.S. Essie at another beach.

There was not much left so it was a quick visit.
